It would be interesting to know how fast most members internet access is, particularly when deciding what video content, and its playback quality, to make available on Talkswindon.

There might also be other 'services' made available via Talkswindon, but this depends whether most members will be able to use it effectively within the limits of their equipment and connection speed.

Theoretically super-fast broadband, but I've yet to find a site which can keep up with it. Either that or I've got a slower connection than I think I should have. I downloaded the .net 2.0 SDK a couple of months ago, over 300 megs of geeky goodness (even if it does come from Microsoft), and it took over 2 hours.

I got a slap on the wrist from my ISP recently though, for "exceptionally" high usage between 6pm and 11pm (which is pretty much the only time I'm home to use it during the week). I guess it was because I'd just discovered the democracy player and was trying to download all the back catalogue of Channel Frederator cartoons  :bottom:

If you do decide to publish more videos here, is there any chance of setting TalkSwindon up as a channel which democracy player users can subscribe to? Then I just need to figure out a way to set democracy player to download everything while I'm in bed and automatically shut the PC down when it's finished.

Although I'm on BT with their 2mbps service, I recently upgraded to a laptop and wireless router and my connection speed always show as 54mbps.  So I'm not really sure what speed I really get.

I am thinking of changing supplier as BT seem to be bloody expensive now so I'll be looking very closely at the ever changing packages on offer, particularly Sky.

Can anyone offer any personal experiences on which ISPs are good or best avoided?  To me price isn't everything, reliability will be a key point for me.

NT(hel)L.... 8mb.

Work PC is directly connected so reasonably quick.
Linksys Wireless router connected to provide connection for kids PCs upstairs, slower connection for them.

SlingMedia is a natty little tool to enable you to push a video feed out from your Sky Box thru your Broadband connection.

Not sure I'd want to see video from TalkSwindon...... Audio only might be better option as this would suit dial up connections too.

Well, I won't be recommending Tiscali at the moment. They've just sent me a second and final warning, despite the fact that I've stopped using the Democracy Player, I've been avoiding the temptation of video content, I haven't downloaded any big applications, I don't use peer-to-peer file sharing software and I made a point of publishing those video and audio clips on Sunday before 6pm.

So apart from the weekends, I've been using my super-fast broadband connection like a 56k dial-up connection, which really sucks.

I've written back to them explaning all this and asking why they still think my usage is "exceptionally high", only to receive an auto-reply telling me they might get back to me in 3 working days.

BT 8mb here....

We can't fault the service which seems to be 'up' 100%.

Usually we have a fairly consistant 4-5mbps connection speed.

Speeds during the summer holidays have regularly dipped to under 2mbps, but with all the children on holiday the contention ratio must be buggered up something chronic  :-\

However, I do a fair bit of ftp'ing up to, and down from, the Talkswindon server and we're quite heavy on peer-to-peer , apple i-tunes and suchlike, but have yet to receive an 'extra billing' from BT regarding our usage.

We're pretty satisfied with bt, but if another provider could give me a stable and consistant 8mbps broadband connection with a high monthly data-transfer allowance, I'd be more than interested.....

BTW, BT users should be aware that they can upgrade to the 8mb connection at no extra charge...  :)

But don't you have to 'sign up' for another 12 month contract?  I did this in order to jump the queue for 2mbps with BT, however with the ever changing broiadband pricing and new players, I'm not sure I'd do that again just now.

Da !

We had a bit of a set-to with BT over being charged for a 2mb connection, yet achieving speeds of less than 512k.

'Dave' from Delhi,  was at pains to point out the tiny print 'up to 2mbps'...... which, funnily enough, wasn't quite as impressive as the large-print adverts  ;D

Quite happy with our current status though.....

I got 512K because someone told me that lines in Swindon could not be guaranteed to go faster than that.  It does virtually everything I want.

Have you never heard of Swindon Borough Council's Wifi? It may be worth considering adding the option to the survey?

Tiscali- generally about 7.5 mbps- not too bad.

Hearing good things about Virgin after a friend had a diabolical experience with BT- who consistently failed to speak to her when she rang to complain.

Buggered if I know, but the green lights blink really, really quickly. Probably faster than the blue light on an emergency vehicle, so I reckon I am getting about 30 to the gallon.

In fact if you blow a raspberry the light blinks about as fast as your lips move.

Hope that helps.

From my limited understanding anything that goes through copper wiring will be slower that Fibre optics. Whilst BT are upgrading only Virgin currently offer a fibre optic service for faster speeds. I have to question this assertion if the connection at the other end is through copper? Perhaps some of it goes up through the ether 'a la wifi' to be transmitted through space and time offering a mainly wire free/fibre optic solution.

I am sure Chris who is more informed than most in this matter can offer a more accurate understanding.

Mine must be the same as Mart's.

I don't ask much of the internet.

Everything's been quicker since I had 1gig of something (DDR???)  added a couple of weeks ago.

Sounds about right, Mellon. Daughter came in and said no wonder it's slow you've only got 256meg, better put some more in....and she did.

If they didn't know so much I'd have to learn more - but then she can't sew for toffee.

one other thing that can have a big impact on your apparent broadband speed (especially on some of the speed tests) is your virus checker... some of the more modern ones expect a multi-core super computer to run them on and will really impact download speeds on an older PC or a netbook...

Norton is by far the worst.. I have an older PC that the kids use - I discovered that it was using around 70% of its CPU just keeping the virus checker up to date (the particular version of Norton was doing updates every 15 minutes and couldn't be disabled).

Expensive Norton gone and replaced with Avast which is free, and much less intrusive.

Yep, Avast here too.

Norton, Macbastard and the others aren't allowed anywhere near my equipment.

I currently have the virgin extra large package 50 meg broad band, I have heard they are bringing out the 100 meg soon.

I am also thinking of upgrading my laptop and going for one with a solid state HD, which should hopefully make a  difference to it's performance ;)
