BMW Footpath 'Elimination'
« on: October 30, 2010, 09:33:21 pm »
Does anyone have idea about alterations to the footpath/cyclepath between Green Road and Bridge End Road/Gypsy Lane? I spotted a SBC public notice stuck to a lamp post at the Bridge End Road/Gypsy Lane today talking about it's 'elimination' from OS Maps.

The consultation period ended on the 21st October, but a hunt on the SBC website finds no trace of such an order, anyone have any ideas?

Is the word 'elimination' (in planning/footpath terms) as sinister as it sounds, or is the change simply on paper with no change to walkers and cyclists?

It's a massive footpath and links two areas through a largely industrial area with relatively poor footpath access, it's not really being eliminated/closed, is it?

They have been too quiet for too long.

This is  a 'tidying up' exercise. SBC intend to digitise their maps so that you can look them up rather than have to trog all the way into town to see them.

It's to-doing with the legal terms. It's defined on the OS maps as footpath - which means it's illegal to cycle on them.  Lifting the definition means it will show up on the maps as both.  (probably measn that they can get funding from cycle place to upgrade them too)

I was assured nothing will change on the ground. sounds like a positive move to me.

the order has been printed in the adver today for attention, if this is the same path that I use to cycle to work, there is a footpath and cycle path alongside each other, so cant see what is the problem unless they intend to merge the two..
