News reports that ID cards will be scrapped
« on: May 13, 2010, 07:38:14 am »
Dear All,

Today the following statement was put up on IPS' website:

"Both Parties that now form the new Government stated in their manifestos that they will cancel Identity Cards and the National Identity Register. We will announce in due course how this will be achieved. Applications can continue to be made for ID cards but we would advise anyone thinking of applying to wait for further announcements."

"Until Parliament agrees otherwise, identity cards remain valid and as such can still be used as an identity document and for travel within Europe. We will update you with further information as soon as we have it."

Our reaction:

We will seek to influence *how* the scheme will be cancelled. Since the programme has been for the past 3 years being trimmed and modified to build the infrastructure for the scheme into passports and the visa system, it will take more than superficial cancellation to eradicate the danger. We need to ensure that the ID scheme is gone; and that it is permanently gone. That means giving back to everyone the capacity to control their own identities.  NO2ID will not be satisfied till the National Identity Scheme is gone and those who planned and executed it are no longer able to drive public policy.

As a result of the recent events and change of government our Tri-fold leaflets with the membership form on the back are being decommissioned as they are no longer relevant (referring to the previous government). The 'Don't be a Guinea Pig' leaflets should still be distributed to people as the scheme is still open for the time being to new applications. We will be working on a new leaflet that should be ready for June, please continue raising awareness of the dangers this scheme poses and collecting signatures for our petition. With a bit more effort achieving what we have all worked so hard for is now a real possibility.

Many thanks
