Countdown to the 2010 general election

The present parliament which first met on 11 May 2005 will expire at midnight on 10 May 2010.

Under the provisions of the Septennial Act 1715 as amended by the Parliament Act 1911, If Gordon Brown has not called a general election prior to midnight on 10 May 2010, the first day on which the royal proclamation announcing a new election could be made is the 11th of May 2010. Assuming the Royal Proclamation is made immediately on the 11th of May 1020 the general election would be held on:

Thursday the 3rd of June 2010

[countdown=6,3,2010,08,00]Polling is now open for the 2010 General Election[/countdown][/size]

I have set the Talkswindon election countdown timer* to coincide with the opening of polling stations at 07:00hrs on Thursday the 3rd of June 2010.

The United Kingdom general election will take place in all constituencies of the United Kingdom for seats in the House of Commons.

The number of seats will rise from 646 to 650 under the proposals made by the Boundary Commissions for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the Scottish Boundary Commission having made its last review prior to the 2005 general election.

*About the timer:

It updates each time you visit this page. If it does not update automatically, press you f5 key to refresh the page manually.

The countdown timer will be adjusted finally when the date of the election is confirmed.
